Dougald has been a contributing writer for eight how-to books: Make it Last, Yankee's Practical Problem Solver and Yankee's Practical Pet Solutions (Yankee Publishing); Shameless Shortcuts (Rodale); Five Minute Fixes (Reader's Digest); Great Garden Projects (Rodale); Don't Throw it Out (Yankee/Rodale); and Forbidden Advice (Reader's Digest).

Dougald's first book, Longs Peak: The Story of Colorado's Favorite Fourteener, was published in June 2004.

The book was named best in its class at the 12th Banff Mountain Book Festival in November 2005.
